This picture is for Maryellen and Tom. There are dozens of these little guys all over the place here in Moab, like ants at a picnic. I think the one in the middle is having a tumbleweed for breakfast:

We drove 358 miles today to Virgin, Utah - just outside of Zion National Park.
After the first 10 miles, all of the beautiful color disappeared from the scenery. Then it got flat, dry, and desolate. And got worse. Just after Green River we saw a sign that said "106 miles to next gas". Poppa stopped and filled up. In the next couple miles, the scenery became the worst I've ever seen. It looked like a slag heap in Pittsburgh. Then, going around another bend, we encountered the San Rafael Reef:

Scenery on the rest of the trip went back and forth from ugly to great.
Remember the sign that said "106 miles to next gas"? It was 100 miles before we saw a house! Aside from the road and the cars and trucks on it, we saw no evidence of people except one electric line that crossed the road and disappeared. The only animals we saw were a few birds.
We were supposed to go to Interstate 15, but we decided to take a side road, US 89. It was very scenic. A nice little town named Panguitch had some really neat brick houses. A friend of Poppa's bought a hat there once.
We went past Bryce Canyon National Park, which we will go back to visit tomorrow or Tuesday. Then we drove down 2,000 feet through Zion National Park to get to our campground. ABSOLUTELY THE MOST INCREDIBLE SCENERY SO FAR!! We'll be here until Friday.
Nana and Poppa's cell phones don't work here! If you need to get in touch with them, send email.
We were on the road for 7 1/2 hours today, so I'm off to bed.
