May 15 at Frankie's in Louisville

We were pretty busy last evening, so I didn't get to blog about yesterday. Here's what happened yesterday in Columbus.

We promised to be good, so Nana and Poppa took us with them for the tour.

At the veteran's memorial, some of the columns had last letters between the soldiers and their families carved in them:

Here's a better pictures of the Coatsworth brick in the veterans' sidewalk:

The Miller family owns the Cummins engine company which makes small engines for Dodge Ram pickups and big engines for cargo ships. Why isn't it the Miller engine company? Their chauffeur was a tinkerer who made improvements to the early Diesel engines, so they bankrolled the beginning of the company and used his name. Here is the headquarters building:

Poppa says someone exploded this Diesel engine, but I don't know why:

This is the Cerealine Building. Corn grits were made here to be used in breweries, and later as the first dry breakfast cereal in the country. Later, Corn Flakes were invented. What came after Corn Flakes? Sugar Frosted Flakes! Who sold them? Tony the Tigger!

Henry Moore's "Large Arch" was made in England, shipped across the ocean and up the Mississippi River, then trucked to Columbus. Nana doesn't care much for modern art, but Poppa has an interesting story about Moore. Ask him if you want to hear it.

Here are two of the modern churches in Columbus designed by famous architects. They're really neat, but you'll have to go to the web site I posted a few days ago to get details:

Dottie and I liked "Goddess of the Dawn":

Finally, they took us for ice cream:

Why would they call a nice lady like Wilma a "soda jerk"? This may explain it:

After leaving Columbus we drove to Nana's cousin's house in Louisville, Kentucky. Nana and Frankie say "Hi" to Kim and Maryellen:

At Frankie's house we met some new friends:

and an old friend:

Shades of Dr. Seuss - is that a cool sofa or what?

  1. I love that the streetlights are bowing to the goddess of dawn.
