Poppa's shaking his head over some "statistical anomalies." When he hitched the trailer to go from Fort Stockton to Carlsbad a few weeks ago, the odometer on the truck was exactly 50,000 miles. When he unhitched here last night, it was exactly 53,000 miles. He thinks there might be a good lottery number in there somewhere. BTW, yesterday was a 395 mile day.
Some people have asked Poppa how to post comments about my blog. At the bottom of the pages is a box for "Post a Comment" where you can point out my typing mistakes. (Just kidding) Unfortunately, you also have to select a "Profile" which involves logging in as a Google account (Gmail, etc.) or one of several other services. Kind of a pain. Maybe Poppa should have checked that out when choosing blogging software. If you sent your comments to him in an email, he'd probably be embarrassed into posting it for you.
Today we took a 153 mile day trip through Kings Canyon. (We really do have to learn to find campgrounds closer to the park entrances.) It's kind of connected to Sequoia National Park, which we will visit tomorrow. Kings Canyon has massive granite walls and was formed partly by glaciers 15,000 years ago and partly by the King River since then.
There are bigger trees here than I've ever seen before. They're called "sequoia" trees, and they can be 3,500 years old. You can hardly see Nana's blue shirt in this picture, and probably can't see me at all:
The tree below is called General Grant. He's 247 feet tall, and it would take 16 people Poppa's size with arms stretched out finger-tip to finger-tip to reach around it. Tomorrow we'll see one called General Sherman that's even bigger - probably the biggest tree in the world! Poppa couldn't even get all of General Grant in the picture:
Here's what baby Sequoias look like:
After seeing the trees, we drove into Kings Canyon:
We saw the wild water of the King River:
...and Grizzly Falls:
I learned how to keep my food away from bears:
Poppa always likes to embarrass me by sticking me with a bunch of flowers:
And a final picture of two rivers coming together in the valley:
You can see part of the road on the right. We went from 257 feet of elevation to 7,000 feet. Nana kept her eyes closed a lot of the time. Poppa kept repeating a mantra from motorcycle class: "Look through the curve. Look where you WANT to go."
I thought it was fun!!
