Zion NP, Utah to Las Vegas, Nevada

Today we drove 195 miles from Zion National Park to Las Vegas, Nevada. (That includes a 50 mile side trip I'll tell you about later.)

Remember the Virgin River that carved Zion Canyon from almost 8,000 feet? We followed it down to 1,900 feet into Arizona. The steep canyons were awesome at first, but not as pretty as Zion because they were mostly grey and a little brown.

Then we came out into a long, flat desert with Joshua Trees.

By now, the Virgin River looked pretty tired after all the work it had done carving through the canyons. It was pretty much just a wet stretch of sand - almost no water left.

We drove into Mesquite, Nevada and immediately saw casinos. And palm trees. Do they think they're in Florida?

Remember the people we met at breakfast on Tuesday in Zion? They recommended that we stop at the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. Here's a picture going down a valley into the park - doesn't look like "Valley of Fire":

Then we go around a bend as see this:

Really amazing rocks!! This place could be fun for hide-and-seek!!

From there we drove into Las Vegas. Not much good to say about it. Poppa wouldn't even let me read billboards and signs. Not a good place for little kids or Tiggers. Not real good for Nanas and Poppas either. They're going to a show tomorrow night, but will probably leave a day early on Sunday instead of staying 'til Monday.
